About The Reparations Team
We formed the Reparations Team with the belief that building a diverse, multicultural Beloved Community through actions that accountably dismantle racism is a necessary key to bringing about justice and equity. We have committed ourselves to the concept and actions needed to repair the breach of inequity brought about by our country's history of slavery and the subsequent systemic racism that is inherent in our society.
In the fall of 2023 and early 2024, our church hosted a couple of opportunities to meet and hear from members of the Justice League of Greater Lansing, whose mission is to increase wealth equity for African Americans in the Greater Lansing Area. The Justice League is accomplishing this mission by building relationships and facilitating reparations between houses of worship and collaborative partners to increase wealth equity for African Americans in the Greater Lansing Area. By building an endowment fund through payments from faith-based individual donors, along with corporate and community-based organizations, grants are to be awarded in three major areas: education scholarships, homeownership, and business startups.
The goals of the Reparations Team are: to support the Justice League of Greater Lansing in its mission, and to work toward enabling UU Lansing to make payments toward the Justice League's endowment fund. In this way, we can help repair the breach of inequity in our community.
